Burundi's President Evariste Ndayishimiye and Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa launched the construction of a 282-kilometer, $2.15 billion Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) connecting Musongati, Burundi, to Uvinza, Tanzania. This project, inaugurated on August 16, 2025, represents Burundi's first rail network, targeting increased trade and regional integration.
Key Details of the Railway Project:
- Purpose: To connect Burundi directly to the Port of Dar es Salaam, reducing transport costs and facilitating the export of nickel, iron, and platinum.
- Infrastructure: The SGR includes a 190-kilometer section in Tanzania and a 110-kilometer section in Burundi.
- Timeline: The project is expected to be completed within 72 months (approximately 6 years).
- Strategic Impact: The railway, known as part of the Central Corridor, aims to connect inland economies to the sea and will eventually connect with eastern DR Congo.
- Implementation: The project is supported by the Tanzanian government and Chinese contractors.
This project is seen as a key component of Burundi's Vision 2040–2060, aiming to move away from expensive road transport for trade.
