The German government has approved the sale of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Turkey as of July 2025, lifting its previous veto on the deal. The deal, driven by the UK, allows the jets to be produced and delivered to Ankara, helping modernize Turkey's air force, which was impacted by its removal from the F-35 program.

Key details of the sale include:

  • Scope: The deal involves 40 Eurofighter Typhoon jets, which will be assembled in the UK, involving components from Germany, Italy, and Spain.
  • Background: Germany previously blocked the sale due to tensions with Turkey, but agreed to the sale, supported by British pressure regarding job security and NATO strategic interests.
  • Negotiation Lead: The UK played a leading role in negotiations, with a memorandum of understanding signed on July 23, 2025.
  • Alternative Acquisition: In addition to the new jets, London has facilitated the transfer of 24 used Typhoons from Qatar and Oman, with deliveries expected to begin in 2026.

This approval allows Turkey to modernize its aging air fleet with advanced 4.5-generation aircraft, strengthening its capabilities within NATO.
