The Supreme Court of Pakistan officially replaced the 45-year-old Supreme Court Rules, 1980, with the new Supreme Court Rules, 2025, approved unanimously by a full court committee, including Justices Shahid Waheed, Irfan Saadat Khan, and Naeem Akhtar Afghan. These updated rules aim to modernize judicial procedures, enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and integrate technology.

Key Aspects of the Supreme Court Rules, 2025:

  • Modernization: The rules were updated to better suit modern legal practices and technological advancements.
  • Efficiency: Designed to provide clearer procedures, faster justice, and greater accessibility for litigants, the bench, and the bar.
  • Implementation: The new rules came into effect to replace the outdated 1980 framework, with a focus on improving the overall performance of the apex court.
  • Pending Matters: While new rules apply, it was noted that ongoing or pending cases would continue to be processed under the previous, older rules.
