Renowned Pakistani veteran journalist, columnist, and editor Zubeida Mustafa passed away in Karachi on 9 July 2025 at the age of 84 after battling illness.
🇵🇰 Zubeida Mustafa was one of Pakistan’s most respected journalists, known for her incisive writing, integrity, and commitment to social issues.
She began her career in the 1960s and joined Dawn newspaper in 1975, becoming one of the first women in mainstream Pakistani media to hold a senior editorial position.
During her 33-year tenure at Dawn, she served as a columnist and assistant editor, championing subjects like education, public health, human rights, gender issues, and the rights of the marginalized.
She played a major role in creating influential sections and supplements, including Books & Authors and dedicated pages on education and health.
Her work earned her numerous accolades, including the International Women’s Media Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 and other national recognitions.
Her passing was widely mourned in the media community. Colleagues and press organisations hailed her as a trailblazer and guiding force who raised journalistic standards and inspired generations of writers and editors in Pakistan.
